I originally opened this up to replace the Davis installed overly generious 1-1/2" cable coming out of it with one a little more practical (and useful). I found when wall mounting the Vantage Pro I could not hide the cables in the wall behind the unit because this overly long (rolleyes) OEM installed cable would not allow for that, epecially when it had to be connected to the OEM supplied 8' cable with the big connector on the end. How stupid can Davis get? Obviously none of them must have thought of just connecting the 8' cable to the Datalogger directly, that would have been way too simple. I don't know of anyone's PC that sits 1-1/2" from the Vantage Pro Console (rolleyes again).
Now that I see how simple this is I'm considering coming up with my own version, that way people who want to connect their Vantage Pro to a PC but don't need (or want) Davis's WeatherWhatever software can do so without spending (and wasting) $150 just to get the Datalogger.
And just to show how stupid this really is overall, the two main components in the Datalogger U1 and U2, sell for $1.02 and $0.73 respectivley, so don't ya think Davis could have incorporated them into the Vantage Pro directly to provide a serial port to connect to a PC (like LaCrosse does) and not have you spend an additional $150?? But no, this was strictly a marketing decision by Davis IMO to make more money. I doubt there are $10 worth of parts in the Datalogger, I'm going to do a BOM and come up with a cost. The PCB be about 66 cents in quantities of 1000.
